Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are thin, plastic coatings painted onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to prevent tooth decay. They are especially important for children, as their new molars are particularly susceptible to cavities. The sealant creates a protective barrier over the deep pits and grooves of the teeth, where food particles and bacteria often become trapped and are difficult for a toothbrush to reach.
Dental sealants are primarily recommended for children around age 6 and teenagers around age 12.

The dental sealant procedure
- Applying sealants is a simple, quick, and painless process that can be done in a single visit
- The teeth to be sealed are thoroughly cleaned to remove any plaque or food remnants.
- The tooth is dried; cotton rolls and dry angles are placed around it to keep it free from moisture.
- An acidic solution is applied to the tooth's chewing surface for a few seconds to slightly prepare the enamel. This helps the sealant bond securely to the tooth.
- The etching solution is rinsed off, and the tooth is dried again. The surface should have a chalky appearance.
- The liquid sealant is painted onto the tooth and flows into the deep grooves and fissures, hardening the sealant by using a curing light on the chewing surface of the teeth.
